Lessons from my first year full time

My First Year in Full Time Photography: Lessons Learned

I hit the benchmark of one whole year in full time photography last September. I have learned a LOT even though I have been in the photo industry for years!! I wanted to share some of those lessons in case you’re a fellow business owner navigating a similar time.

Setting Boundaries

I quickly realized that setting boundaries is key. I've set specific times for shooting and editing, which helps me balance work (even if it doesn't feel like work) and my personal life. I utilize office hours and specific deadlines so clients know when they can expect those final pics!

Finding Creativity in Everyday Life

I've learned to see creativity everywhere and not to limit it to my work life. Everyday moments and travel can make remind me why moments are worth freezing and it has made me appreciate every session more.

Preventing Burnout with Realistic Goals

Avoiding burnout has been a big one. I set achievable goals for myself and take breaks when I need to. I try not to say yes to every project until I know I have the capacity to serve them well. It's all about enjoying the process without putting too much pressure on myself.

Investing in Equipment

Upgrading my gear was a game-changer. It's not just about having the latest and greatest, but having reliable equipment that helps me capture the shots in almost every scenario. When I can trust I have the machinery to back up every creative vision, I am ten times more confident!

Looking back, this first year has shown me I will never stop learning! These simple lessons have shaped my confidence and approach to my work.

So, whether you're new to photography or a seasoned pro, I hope these tips help you on your own photography journey. Happy shooting!
